Thunder Bay Person of the Month: Jessica Mamakeesick

Our Person of the Month is Jessica Mamakeesick, an Oji-Cree Metis artist with roots in Sandy Lake and KeeWayWin whose Woodland-style work has become a fixture of Thunder Bay's arts scene.

After nearly two decades away from art while raising her son and building a career, Jessica woke from a vivid dream in 2021 of painting a feather in Indigenous style. The next morning she picked up a brush and has not stopped since. Her first online piece sold within minutes; today she runs a shop at the Goods & Co. Market and has designed jerseys for the Thunder Bay Women's Hockey Association and the Lakehead Thunderwolves, plus awards for Ontario University Athletics.

Her story is exactly the kind of quiet, determined success that makes this city remarkable: talent, generosity, and the courage to act on a dream.
