Lakehead Students Launch Free Tutoring for Newcomer Kids

A group of Lakehead University students has launched a free after-school tutoring program for children from recently arrived immigrant and refugee families.

The program pairs volunteer tutors with elementary and high-school students for help with homework, English, and - just as importantly - the social footing that makes a new school feel less overwhelming. Sessions run twice a week out of a donated community space.

Organizers say the waitlist filled within days, a sign both of need and of how quickly the city's newcomer population is growing. They are now recruiting more tutors for the fall.
